How to Tackle a Project That Scares You - The Muse

How to Tackle a Project That Scares You - The MuseHow to Tackle a Project That Scares You My career has been filled with daunting tasks. I graduated with a degree in the all-too-general category of business, which didnt exactly prepare me for any one specific industry. So, when I settled into a career with a healthcare technology company- knowing absolutely nothing about healthcare or technology- I was faced with a tough gig.My anfhrer would pull me into her office and rush through my next assignment Listen, I need you to reconcile ur 10 biggest clients lists of providers with their billing before we switch to the new accounting software. Id nod and take notes, but inside, my stomach was turning over with a mixture of fear and frustration. I dont even know where to departure, Id scowl. How does she expect me to do this? But the thing is, regardless of whether you know how to do something or not, its part of your job to make sure it gets done. You wont always be able to get formal com pany training, and often, your boss wont be able to guide you through the task step-by-step its up to you to figure out how to see it through. After a good deal of frustration, I eventually learned how to take that completely overwhelmed feeling and turn it into something productive. Heres how.1. Get Rid of Your Negative OutlookWhen youre tasked with something new and difficult, your first thought is likely, I cant do this. Ive been there. Ive sat at my desk with my head in my hands, going through all the stages of an impossible project, from bewilderment (Theres no way my boss really expects me to do this) to denial (This must have been a mistake- I dont really have to do this) to all-out refusal (Ill just tell my boss to give this project to someone else). Eventually, though, you realize that you do, in fact, have to do it- and the sooner you get started, the better. So, kick the negativity, and try to approach the project with the attitude that youre going to use the task to gain skills, make new connections, and prove to your boss that youre up for anything.2. Start With a Small StepIve learned that the best first step for tackling a seemingly impossible project is to tackle a small portion of the task (and I mean a very, very, ridiculously minute detail). For example, when I was tasked with the provider reconciliation project, my first step was simply hitting the send button on a conference call invite to one of my remote teammates to discuss the task. It wasnt a critical meeting with any of the big players on the project, but it was locked in on my calendar, and it gave me a starting point.Whether its creating the bare bones of a spreadsheet youll use or looking up the phone number of a contact you need to get in touch with, just start. It may seem insignificant at first, but by the end of the day, youll be further along than youd be if youd just kept telling yourself that you couldnt do it.3. Gather Information and ResourcesNow that youre committed, its time to dig in and face the reality of the situation You may not have all the tools or knowledge you need to actually complete the project. But thats OK- you just have to track them down.Sometimes its as easy as finding a knowledgeable colleague and asking if he can help you with the task or if you can pick her brain to learn how to do it yourself. Other times, youll need to recruit an employee to contribute directly to the project or ask for an introduction to, say, someone in the accounting department to get insight into the billing system or a business analyst who can help you develop a report that will give you the information you need. Whatever or whoever it is, reach out and start asking for what you need. Once you take the initiative, youll typically find that people are willing to help and resources are available. And leaning on that knowledge is a much better alternative than trying to do it all on your own.4. Take a Whack at ItSoon, youll come to a point where theres no mo re preparation (or procrastination) that you can do youve tracked down resources, scheduled introductory meetings, and prepped your materials. You may still feel insecure about leaping into an unfamiliar task, but while the threat of failure is looming, theres nothing you can do except to go for it. Really, there are only two things that can happen Either everything will go as planned and youll have an accomplishment under your belt, or you wont quite get it on the first try and can move on to step five. 5. Assess and RepeatAfter youve made a first attempt, you have an even more valuable tool available to you feedback from your boss and colleagues. Once youve done something- anything- your teammates will be able to take a look at your progress so far and may be able to pinpoint where you went wrong or where you could approach the project or task differently. Even if you stump the rest of the team and have to approach your boss with your less-than-stellar attempt, bringing something to your boss will show more initiative and drive to succeed than if youd simply protested the project from the beginning. And likely, he or she will be able to point you in a new direction. Being tasked with an unfamiliar project can be incredibly daunting, but when you approach it with a positive attitude and a well thought out strategy, its much more doable than you think. Take it from me.

A Definition of, and Look at, Compilation Albums

A Definition of, and Look at, Compilation AlbumsA Definition of, and Look at, Compilation AlbumsA compilation album is a general term used to refer to a music release made of up of songs that bedrngnis intended to be viewed as a single work. Compilation albums are frequently referred to as comps and are often comprised of tracks by various artists. However, they can sometimes feature a single artist, but this is not the norm. A single artist release includes soundtracks, label samples, and theme albums. Soundtrack Compilations Music critics cite Jay-Zs soundtrack compilation album, for director Baz Luhrmanns film version of The Great Gatsby, as a prime example of a well-thought-out soundtrack that presented a broad range of music. The album features Jay-Zs and Beyonces contributions, 100$ Bill and Back to Black, as well as Jack Blacks Love Is Blindness. These songs appealed to a broad range of filmgoers and music lovers while still nailing the emotional undertones of the movie in an imaginative and surprising way. Not surprisingly, others, who perhaps expected a primarily orchestral soundtrack, really hated it. Not surprisingly, many of the other soundtrack compilations rated best have been for youth-pop culture films like the Hunger Games. Thats becauseyoung filmgoers are often the most passionate consumers of contemporary music. Best Examples of Label Compilations Again, not surprisingly, some of the more interesting label compilations come from labels with strong, sometimes idiosyncratic, identities. One example is Nonesuch Records, which during its period of greatest influence ably represented musician/producer/music lover Bob Hurwitz who had a talent for identifying, supporting, and releasing compilation albums by great artists at the beginning of their careers. These musicians include John Adams, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich, which represent the pantheon of American Minimalism. Hurwitz also fostered the career of the groundbreaking Kronos Quart et. The range of Nonesuchs compilations is both wide and deep. It includes two- and four-CD compilations of 20 years of Wilco, as well as the early Kronos compilation Winter Was Hard. That album introduced John Zorn, John Lurie, Terry Riley, Astor Piazzolla, Aulis Sallinen, turntablist Terry Riley, Alfred Schnittke, and Samuel Barber. It cant get much more eclectic than that.? Other successful label compilations have come from labels with similarly strong identities, including Rhino Records, Stax/Volt, and Atlantic Records (especially in their early Ahmet Ertegun-led years). Not to be missed in that category is the related Warner label, Elektra. A Look at Theme Albums A theme album is a completely different animal than a compilation album. A theme album can be almost anything. This kind of album ranges from the retrospective collection of a prominent artists hits (and, misses) to a lets-cash-in-on-it collection of a musical genre making a comeback to collections of previously un released werkstoff from well-known artists. Or, it can be an album of unreleased work (for no apparent reason) or, it can be a combination of all of the above. One Last Word About Compilation Albums Compilation albums can be difficult to put together because the label releasing the album must secure permission from all of the parties involved. This can mean juggling demands of a long list of publishers, labels, and musicians, who sometimes have conflicting interests. This fact is true even of a single-artist compilation album if the artist has worked with more than one label over the course of his or her career.

Why Its Wrong to Think You Cant Be Happy at Work- The Muse

Why Its Wrong to Think You Cant Be Happy at Work- The MuseWhy Its Wrong to Think You Cant Be Happy at WorkYoure a skeptic. You read career advice telling you to follow your passion and find a career you love, and while it all sounds great in theory, youre not buying it. I get it. As someone who writes about the career space daily, Ive encountered many people who dont share the same philosophy as me. People who believe theres no possible way that you can be as happy at the office as you are outside of it- so you might as well really embrace the idea of working for the weekends. But, as someone who can also say with certainty Im a better person and employee when Im enjoying my work, I decided to take on the challenge of refuting this notion.Heres why people say its impossible to be happy at work- and why theyre wrong1. Thats Why Its Called Work, Its Not Supposed to Be FunWhen I was a kid, Id regularly ask my dad how his day went- and his response was always, without fail, work was work. We joke about it now, but at the time, all I could think was how miserable it must be to have nothing to talk about at the end of the day- let alone warrant this kind of sad, exhausted response.Yes, work is work (weve even written about this exact concept)- youll have bad days, busy days, stressful days, angry days where you want to cry into a pillow. Even I come home sometimes and, when asked how my day went, tell my roommate the same thing my dad used to tell me. But this shouldnt happen every day. Why? Because- and this may surprise you- some people actually have jobs in which theyre happy most of the time. Maybe, they even have fun. And it makes them a better employee (just read this article and this one), because they come into the office feeling motivated and excited to get things done.2. I Didnt Choose a Fun Industry and Thats ThatWell, thats just defeatist.First off, youre never stuck in one industry. People change careers all the time into roles that are more interesting to them (just read these stories about people whove transitioned from teaching to engineering, from being a lawyer to being a social worker, to working as a mental health counselor to working as a TV producer, and from being a government worker to becoming a beer and wine director). And also, any industry can be fun if youre at the right company and passionate about what youre doing. Its very possible your job isnt fun because you work for a dysfunctional company or with people you dont respect, or are a part of projects that you dont believe in, but not because you work in a joy-less field. 3. Money Makes Me Happy- I Dont Need to Enjoy How I Make ItI wont deny that having money can make your life easier, if not more enjoyable. I also wont deny that in many situations, its not a luxury, but rather a true necesity. But plenty of research proves that its not your key to happiness. One study reported that lottery winners are no happier than losers. Another suggests that focusing our energie s on money distracts us from what really makes us happy. And another, probably one of the more famous discoveries, found that our happiness peaks at around $75,000 a year. But besides all the scientific evidence, think about it this way You spend about 50 hours a week at work, also known as 30% of your time (and thats not even factoring in how much we check email after hours). Consider our other life responsibilities (eating, sleeping, chores), and that leaves us with very little time to actually enjoy all the money we make. If youre spending most of your days doing one thing, doesnt it just make sense to like that one thing? Just a little bit?Hopefully Ive convinced you that its possible (and necessary) to be happy in your role. Im not saying that you should drop everything today to pursue something you love. But I believe everyone deserves the best in their career and if you take just one baby step today toward something thatll make you happy, youll landsee that it can completely c hange your outlook on work and life.

Learn About Being a Music Promoter

Learn About Being a Music PromoterLearn About Being a Music PromoterThe main job of a music vermittler, usually simply called a promoter, is to publicize a concert. Promoters are the people in charge of putting on the show. They work with agents or in some cases, directly with the combos and with clubs and concert venues to arrange for a show to take place. Promoters are also in charge of making sure the sie sagen es gets out about that show. They also take care of arranging the incidentals, like hotels and backline for the band. In a nutshell, it is the promoters job to make sure things go off without a hitch. Note that this kind of promoter is different from a radio plugger or PR agent. What Jobs a Promoter Should Do If the promoter is not tied to a specific venue, they should Collaborate with bands and agents to agree on a date for a performanceNegotiate a deal with the band/agent for the show. What fee will be paid? Will the promoter provide accommodation?Book a venue for t he agreed upon datePromote the upcoming gig to the local press, social media channels and radio. They may want to put up posters and email their mailing list.Make sure everything the band needs is in place, such as backline, accommodations, riders, etc.Set up soundcheck times and the running order of the show Arrange for a support band Note Venue-tied promoters should skip the contact venue step. What the Pay Is Like The pay for promoters varies and depends on several factors, including The deal made with the band/agentHow popular the artists are with whom the promoter is working Indie music promoters can find it very hard to make money, and many indie promoters do versetzung on the side of their day jobs. Promoters make their money off of the proceeds generated by a show. Promoters can either have two kinds of deals with bandsPay the band a set fee, no matter how many people buy tickets, and adoor-split deal. With both deals, a promoter can easily lose money on a show. Making m oney as a promoter requires careful planning. Why Promoters Need a Contract When you are dealing with large sums of money, a contract is always a must. But many indie music promoters who know they wont be making much money, if any, on a gig often skip the contract. Even if no money is exchanging hands at the end of the night, though, it is still a good idea for a band and promoter to have a contract that clearly states things like whether or not the promoter will provide accommodation, who is taking care of the backline, when the soundcheck is, how long the bands set will be, what the band will get for a rider, and of course, how any profits will be split. It helps avoid confusion later. How to Become a Promoter There are two ways you can get into promoting. You can contact promoters and venues in your area and offer your services and learn the ropes that way, or you can try to get your promoting career off the ground yourself. If you want to work for yourself, start small. Pick a favorite local band and offer to promote a show for them. Book the venue, contact the local media, get the word out on social media and put up some posters advertising the show. If you do a good job, other bands will find you, and as you become an established promoter in your area, bands from out of the area will find you as well. Making Money as a Promoter Promoters who work with mega stars who sell out huge venues can make some serious money. But indie music promoters can easily find themselves working all day, every day, and only getting deeper into debt. Many promoters have a day job that supports their promotion job. If you want to become a promoter, you need a clear understanding of the money involved, and you need to make deals with bands and venues very carefully. For any given show, a promoters expenses include Venue rentalAdvertising (posters, media advertisements, online marketing costs, etc.)Backline rentalsAccommodation for the bandRiderPayment for the band Y ou cant get around some of these fees, like the venue fee, but there are ways of mitigating some of the expenses involved in promoting and if you want to stay in this for the long haul, you need to cut costs as much as you can. For instance, ask the band/label/agent to print posters and send them to you, instead of you taking that cost on. Dont provide accommodation if the bands show is not going to generate enough money to cover the costs, or if you must, put the band up at your house. Dont provide overly generous riders a few waters and a few beers is fine. Split the cost of renting special equipment with the band. You can also cut down on some of your expenses by working under a door-split deal arrangement, instead of paying the band a set fee. That way, you make all of your money back first, and then the band gets paid if you get paid. Bigger artists will balk at this kind of deal and will want a set fee - paying a set fee is fine, and even ideal, when youre working with a b and who you know will sell enough tickets to recoup your costs. But if the band youre putting on is just building a name for themselves, a door-split deal is fair for everyone. Make sure the band tries to sell some merchandise at the show to give them some extra money. If you have a door-split deal, and the show didnt make any money, a nice promoter might throw the band a little bit of gas money, which can go surprisingly far in earning you a reputation as a good promoter. The truth is that many indie shows lose money, especially shows featuring new bands. As long as you are not withholding earnings from the band, it is perfectly OK to set up your shows so you lose as little as possible. Most up-and-coming bands will recognize that and will work with you. After all, if you succeed, they succeed. Being fair to both parties (yourself included) is the name of the game.

Start a Career as a FBI Police Officer

Start a Career as a FBI polizze OfficerStart a Career as a FBI versicherungspolice OfficerIn the United States, a career as a special agent isnt the only way to find work in law enforcement with the federal government. The Federal Bureau of Investigations, like the United States Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, employs a uniformed police force to protect the people and property of the FBI. As part of the security division within the Bureau, FBI Police officers are more than just security guards. In fact, they are fully sworn federal law enforcement professionals, with full police and arrest powers. They enjoy jurisdiction in and around key FBI facilities, including the FBI Academy and lab in Quantico, Virginia and the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C. Responsibilities Officers with the FBIs police force are responsible for ensuring security at FBI facilities, protecting the people who work with and for the FBI, and enforcing federal laws in and a round property controlled by the FBI. According to the FBIs website, the primary mission of the FBI Police is to deter terrorist attacks with the visible presence of a well trained, well equipped, professional police force and to protect the FBI from criminal acts and unauthorized access. In practice, this means officers maintain access points at FBI facilities and patrol the grounds, buildings, and surrounding areas. FBI officers are tasked with identifying potential threats and preventing, stopping and investigating crimes that occur within their jurisdiction. Opportunities The first step to becoming an officer with the FBI Police is to apply. You can do so by searching current vacancies and submitting an application online at the FBIJobs.gov website or by getting in touch with an FBI recruiter and providing them with your resume. The minimum qualifications for FBI Police officers are similar to the minimum qualifications for other police jobs. You need to be at least 21 years old, a United States citizen, have a valid driver license and be able to qualify for a Top Secret security clearance. If you meet the minimum requirements and prove to be a competitive candidate, you will move on to a panel interview and written test. The test will determine whether or not you have the basic cognitive abilities needed for the job. The panel interview, conducted by active FBI officers, will help determine whether or not youre the right fit for the job. After the interview will come an extensive hintergrund investigation, which will include a polygraph exam and an employment history check. Training If you successfully pass the background check and receive a job offer, youll attend a 12-week Uniformed Police Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia(FLETC). Once you complete your basic training at FLETC, youll attend an FBI Police Advanced Training Program at the FBI Academy. Reasons to Become an FBI Police Officer The starting base salary for FBI Police officers is between $34,000 and $47,000 per year, depending on your level of education and experience. Overtime pay is also available. FBI police officers also receive great federal retirement and healthcare benefits. Besides the pay and benefits, though, a career as an FBI Police officer provides an opportunity to work in a rewarding field protecting and serving others.

Why It#8217;s a Good Idea to Make Your Team Multilingual

Why It8217s a Good Idea to Make Your Team Multilingual Why It8217s a Good Idea to Make Your Team Multilingual We believe that the largest limitation to any company with grenzberschreitend ambitions is no longer technological its human, says Jake Jolis, cofounder and CEO of online language-learning platform Verbling. Companies that want to successfully strengthen their international business arent limited by how equipped their computers are, but rather by how equipped their people are.Thats why Joliss companyrecently launchedVerbling Enterprise, a new service that enables companies to platzset up language lessons for their employees. The Problem Language BarriersVerbling Enterprise aims to address one of the biggest problems in international business language barriers. Although email, chat, and video conferencing make it easy to communicate acrosslong distances, international colleagues do not necessarily understand one another when they do get in contact.According to a 2013 U.S. De partment of Commerce report, foreign-owned companies employed 5.6 million people in the U.S., and U.S.-owned businesses employed 11.6 million workers abroad. While some companies strictly hire multilingual employees to make sure employees can communicate across national boundaries, that requirement disqualifies talented individuals who are willing and eager to learn.Normally, companies would address the language barrier by hiring language consultants who visit their offices during set hours to teach group lessons. philanthropisch resource managers get stuck coordinating schedules among dozens of employees, and inevitably, there are conflicts, which means attendance for these classes is low. Few employees learn new language skills, and the company doesnt see much, if any, return on its investment.Learning Language Through TechVerbling Enterprise wants to change that by making corporate language programs digital. When companies sign up for Verbling Enterprise, employees are able toboo k their language lessons with professional, native-speaking teachers. Employers dont have to worry about scheduling lessons, contracting instructors, or tracking language proficiencies. Their teams can learn new languages from the office or at home, and lessona are available 24/7.We are a technology company, and we dont believe the role of technology is to replace teachers. Its to empower them, Jolis says. Software is good at many things, but its awful at the spoken conversation practice people desperately need. When learning a foreign language, access to the human-to-human speaking practice is what usually makes the difference between novice and expert.Lessons take place with individual teachers over video chat, and Verbling vets prospective teachers to ensure they meet rigorous standards. Instead of codifying a certain way of teaching, Verbling believes learners are unique and their teacher should be, too. That is what makes us so powerful for businesses, says Jolis. HR doesnt have to worry about trying to find a one-size-fits-all teacher for their company, and employees get to pick a teacher who matches their style of learning.Different companies have different needs. Moreover, different employees within each company have different needs. Verbling Enterprise personalizes lessons around the individual employees goals.Setting Companies Up for International SuccessTwo of the biggest challenges international businesses face when battling language barriers materialize in internal communication and efforts to expand. For some of these businesses, internal communication between offices in different countries functions as a central concern. And for companies that want to offer their services to customers whose first language is different from their own, international expansion becomes problematic without a linguistic common ground. In both cases, we reduce language barriers within the company through investment in foreign language skills, Jolis says. From growing reve nue in a new market to cutting costs by improving a supply chain, conducting business across language barriers remains critical to any company with global ambitions.
